Who doesn't love a vintage quilt? I always want to know the story behind it: Who made it? How old is it? Look at that fabric!!!
The vintage quilt above is one of my favorites for good reason, it was quilted by my great-grandma, Nancy Ett Rawson (1877-1962). It is at least 75 years old and hangs lovingly in my mother's home.
My grandmother, Erma Belle Story, often told me stories of great-grandma Rawson (her mother). She was a well known quilter in her time and was often hired to quilt for others. Quilt were made from old clothing, grain sacks, or any cloth available. I love the variety of colors in this vintage fan quilt

Recently I had the privilege of quilting two vintage quilts for a friend. While cleaning out her 98 year old mothers basement, she found 2 quilt tops. I was so excited to quilt them! Notice the variety of fabrics. The wedding ring quilt looks like it was made from old clothing, notice the variety of colors in it! It's amazing to think what these quilters were able to accomplish without the vast variety of tools we have today!
So dig through your grandmothers basement, look in your mother's attic, and if you are lucky enough to find one of these vintage quilts treasure it forever. Thanks for visiting the Front Porch, stop by again soon! Nancy |
